Reading Vs Comprehension : Design Insights

If you are a good reader, the following paragraph will make sense instantly just in one look.

"frequency bandwidth(fb) = bandwidth(sys) computes the bandwidth fb of the SISO dynamic system model sys, defined as the first frequency where the gain drops below 70.79 percent (-3 dB) of its DC value. For FRD models, bandwidth uses the first frequency point to approximate the DC gain."

Ahha...It totally look senseless if you are not an engineer. You cant remember any of it, New information is assimilated more thoroughly when it is plugged into existing cognitive structures. You read it but comprehension "Not my Cup of Tea Duuuuude..!!".

Lets take one more example

"i cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it dseno’t mtaetr in waht oerdr the ltteres in a wrod are, the olny iproamtnt tihng is taht the frsit and lsat ltteer be in the rghi t pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it whotuit a pboerlm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Azanmig huh? yaeh and I awlyas tghuhot slpeling was ipmorantt! "

When you read you don’t absorb exact letters and words and then interpret them later. You anticipate what will come next. The more previous knowledge you have, the easier it is to anticipate and interpret.
You can calculate readability at here at an online readability check tool
Lets get to one more Interesting Example :

TITLES AND HEADLINES ARE CRITICAL

Read this paragraph:
Enter the building, search for the suitable section. Greet the attendent, show the list, but you can also do it yourself; sort the items into like categories. Once you have sorted/taken the items, you are ready to checkout. You may need to follow different queues for different categories of objects you took.

What is the paragraph about? It’s hard to understand. But what if I give you the same paragraph with a title:

SHOPPING AT A SUPER MARKET

Now reading the paragraph makes more sense:
Enter the building, search for the suitable section. Greet the attendent, show the list, but you can also do it yourself; sort the items into like categories. Once you have sorted/taken the items, you are ready to go to checkout. You may need to follow different queues for different objects.

People remember what they read depends in their point of view
In a study by Anderson and Pichert (1978), people read a story about a house and the contents within the house. One group was told to read the story from a buyer’s standpoint, and another group was told to read the story from a burglar’s point of view. The information they remembered after reading the story differed depending on their viewpoint.

This is very interesting how our mind really read and comprehend anything, for more scientific understanding of the process (actually the parts of brains that gets stimulated or stimulates process like Passively viewing words,Listening to words, Speaking words, Generating verbs can be found here

What I actually Learnt here?

  • With Literacy rate soaring all over the world, written syllable is the most easiest and widely used mode of communication. What people understand and remember from what they read depends on their previous experience, their point of view while reading, and the instructions they are given beforehand.
  • Don’t assume that people will remember specific information in what they read. There is always chance game being played between interest, experience, readability and Comprehension.
  • A meaningful title/ headline can do magic, absence of which make them loose the perspective.
  • Knowing your consumers, specifically enhances your writing as well all communication. Using simple words and fewer syllables always increase the value of the communication and reach wider audiences.

A User Interface Solution to Sign Up Forms

Lets Murder them. I hate filling forms in real life too, how can it be any pleasant experience online? Some thing I hate in real world gets multiplied virtually because I have to fill forms for every thing I register for. I start with my name and Gahhh..!! a whole form asking everything about me (some of them ask things that even I am unsure about myself)..

"Well If you are enjoying any service for free, there should be no doubt that you are one of the Products, and so is your data."

Sometimes its OK, but I dont feel very active all the time to fill the forms, and the box, they creeps me out to even register into services that may really help me make my life easier.

Lets kill them.. (Ok, I said it earlier before, but this will actually explain you my level of hate to these forms). Lets look at these creepers closely, and lets try to find a way out. I am writing down some of the ideas that I know, You may add in comments too.
  1. The idea is create Engagement/Interactions not forms.
E.g. Take for example Tripit. This application for managing your travel plans by using your travel confirmation emails could easily have asked all new members to sign up through a registration form. Instead, to the join the service new members simply have to send Tripit a travel confirmation email. From this email, Tripit creates an account and extracts the information it needs to create a rich travel plan for new members. No form required. People sign up for Tripit by using it and learning what the application can do for them.
  2. A different type of Sign Up form  Minimize the Key Inputs, try to make it point and click for web and Touch oriented for Mobiles.

  3. Using Web Services for Login : Web services allow people to log-in to a new service using their profile and contact information from other Web sites. The idea here is to make use of information people have already provided elsewhere instead of having them fill it all in again on your sign-up form.

  1. Other Communication Tools like Email. Tripit already uses it, Posterous, which is a blogging service, let you write a blog post in your email, attach a photo, send it over to Posterous, and they'll essentially publish that whole thing for you, no need to ever get out of your email client. The idea is that input can come from anywhere. You can use your email client to provide input. You can use your IM client to provide input. You can use Twitter, or you can use your calendar. You can use book marklets or browser extensions.
  2. Mad Libs forms ask people the same questions found in typical sign-up forms in a narrative format. They present input fields to people as blanks within sentences.
  3. Create Data Extractions points at various points of user interaction.  Asking people for information once they are already using an application is often more successful than asking them before they start using the application. These days linkedin.com is trying to do the same.

I will keep on updating the list. I personally support all of them equally.

Rise of Mobile BaaS and Future Ahead

The most recent trend in app development has been "backend as a service."  When it comes to an average developer to deliver support with server stacks and storage, data migration middleware managements, these services make possible things like authentication, push notifications, in-app purchases and other services that consumers take for granted.
After Software as a Service (SaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) or Platform as a Service (PaaS), "Backend as a Service" (BaaS) is the new trend. BaaS companies provide easily integrated cloud-based backends for mobile app developers. The drastic change in Data Accessing Methods and Usability has caused the BaaS ecosystem to evolve quickly from a niche vertical into an important industry segment.
Lately termed as Heroku (PaaS) for Mobile Platforms, these BaaS platforms , like Heroku, enable mobile app developers pick and choose which backend services they want to integrate into their apps, which gives developer to focus on perfecting an app's user experience, its design and client-side code than worrying about Backend infrastructure.

Started by StackMob, later the race was joined by Kinvey, Parse and Cocoafish.  There are at least 20 companies that now focus on BaaS in one form or another. The big list comprises of:
Stackmob, Parse, Kinvey, Apple's iCloud, RhoMobile, Appcelerator (Cocoafish), FeedHenry Astrum Space, Scotty App, Webmynd, YorAPI, CloudyRec, Applicasa, QuickBlox, mobDB, Netmera, Kumulos, CodeCloud.io, Sencha.io,Tiggzi and Zipline Games (through its Moai platform).
BaaS and Mobile Applications
There are also a couple of large companies that could move into this space very easily, including Amazon with its AWS products, Microsoft with its Azure Cloud, Google with App Engine, and Rackspace.
And Appecelerator with its ACS (Appecelerator Cloud Services) taking Cocoafish has come up with titanium SDK 2.0 a BaaS system, that gives abilities to write apps,  Objective-C (iOS), Java, PhoneGap, Sencha and HTML5 (among similar services) for native, hybrid or mobile Web deployment.
The goal of each BaaS system is to provide basically the same set of functions to mobile developers. Yet some have broader goals while others focus on certain niches of the mobile development industry. For instance, iKnode calls itself a Backend as a Service provider, but it is designed specifically for .NET architecture, which will limit its broader appeal. CodeCloud.io is a hosted NodeJS and SQLite platform that gives it BaaS-like functionality but also provides a narrower scope. Parse supports both data persistence and push notifications through its REST API.
Ideally in case you are going for any BaaS, here are the point worth pondering over:
  1. The Providers should have atleast satisfactory aptitude in REST (Representational State Transfer) APIs management and implementation.
  2. Facebook/Twitter/Google Login support for User Profiles.
  3. Location Based Data
  4. Analytics and Metrics
  5. Push Notification
  6. Custom Data Objects and Space.
Further, currently a Lot of start ups provide some of them (all of them provided by only some startups that too partially). The best of the best in the BaaS ecosystem do more than just provide certain functions, but also look to be an entire end-to-end cloud service that can make app developers' lives easier.

The picture of future is still hazy as with advent of New App Age, the biggies in the business like said above may also get adamant to enter this market. With a great promise of growth, the Mergers and Acquisitions are very much foreseeable . The War Started by StackMob, is going to grow further and Bigger.
